Here's a thing that makes Mastodon instances work less well than they could...
when you visit an instance, all the front pages look the same.
"About this instance" is a TINY little link under the sign-up form. This is crazy.
Instances should LEAD with a community description, not bury it.
That's like a newsgroup leading with the OS it used to run the newsgroup rather than saying: "This is a Kenny G community"
technical note about this tech as I see some confusion/misconceptions:
Admins of your instance have complete control over your account. Really, we can read all the posts (including DMs) and we can even impersonate/hack your account with ease.
Make sure you trust your admins.
Here on toot.cat we have a CoC that applies to both admins and non admins. Admins are expected to abide by the CoC and not oppress users as well.
Allowing oppressive language 'you disagree with' isn't encouraging free speech, it's encouraging the use of tools specifically designed & used to silence the speech of marginalised people.

Seeing a few white people trying to defend their use of the n-word on here by appearing selfless and making it part of engaging in conversation.
Find an instance with more lax with their admin rules. That's not censorship, that's an individual using their right to not give you an amplifier.
Hmm. So, if whoever runs the instance decides to just pull the plug some day without warning, that's all the accounts, updates etc. just gone, right?
