The photo was for 'Life', which considered the story a priority. IIRC from recently watching the English and Italian releases of the film, Parks' photo was shot during filming: Karin (Ingrid Bergman) is miserable trying to adjust to life on Stromboli, and this photo and scene capture that pain. Deservedly, her Rossellini films are now appreciated.
