Fully support /e/ and love what they are doing. But I was wondering the same: why hasn't this scientific study also looked into how much data Lineage for microG (lineage.microg.org/), CalyxOS or GrapheneOS are "phoning home"?

Framasoft is a brilliant non-profit organisation which promotes free open software and libre decentralised services. You can follow them at:

They have been around for years, and developed Fediverse platforms like @peertube and @mobilizon for example.

They depend on donations to keep going, and they're currently doing a fund-raising drive at:

Yep, although parts of the article are a little bit confusing/misleading: it's default in the US only, and for the time being it's offline (no additional telemetry). It might be rolled out on a larger scale, possibly with more telemetry, but in that case requiring user opt-in. Still unclear if/when this will happen.

So I thought it worthwhile to highlight the actually relevant part of the article: how to disable FF Suggest :)

Sure. It's not like Big Tech would spend millions each year to influence EU institutions:

> Google: €5.8 million
> Facebook: €5.5 million
> Microsoft: €5.3 million
> Apple: €3.5 million

@lefarfadet I'm a firm FF supporter, hence my disappointment:

1. True, FF Suggest has only been enabled by default for the US. So far without additional telemetry being shared

2. But there's plans to have users opt in to FF Suggest & agree to share more data with Mozilla (search terms, location, ...)

3. Arguably, that's not an issue in itself, FF has a right to do business. But Mozilla's lack of transparency is alarming. Such changes have implications. Communication must improve

* Menu > Settings > Privacy & Security
* Scroll down to “Address Bar - Firefox Suggest”
* Disable “Contextual suggestions”
* Disable “Include occasional sponsored suggestions”

Or switch to LibreWolf: librewolf-community.gitlab.io

@oliver @digitalcourage @kuketzblog

* Menu > Settings > Privacy & Security
* Runter scrollen bis “Address Bar - Firefox Suggest”
* “Contextual suggestions” deaktivieren
* “Include occasional sponsored suggestions” deaktivieren

Oder gleich LibreWolf: librewolf-community.gitlab.io

There are lots of Fediverse apps on @fdroidorg, the free open alternative to Google Play. Some Fediverse apps are exclusive to F-Droid!

Unlike Google Play, F-Droid apps are all free, open source and privacy-friendly.

F-Droid can be installed on any Android phone. It's slightly tricky to install because Google tries to block any alternative app stores. However, once it's been installed it is just as easy to use as Google Play.

There are some simple step-by-step F-Droid installation instructions here:

You can find out more about F-Droid on its official site at f-droid.org

Exciting EU study on open source software:

> strongly contributes to GDP
> avoids vendor lock-in
> reduces costs & maintenance
> drives state-of-the-art tech
> fosters competition, interoperability & tech-neutrality

@privacyint Great stuff, resonates with Eric Hughes' 1993 Cypherpunk Manifesto:

"Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. [...] We cannot expect [...] large, faceless organizations to grant us privacy out of their beneficence. [...] We must defend our own privacy if we expect to have any."

What’s always motivated and inspired us is what privacy enables, and what we lose if we lose our privacy.

That’s why we looked at the key role plays in protecting people’s freedoms.

Snowden: "Apple just declared war on your privacy"

Make peace, not war. Choose free and open source software over privacy intruding services from Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon or Microsoft.

"Linux is without exaggeration a foundation of the digital society".

Yep. For over 30 years, GNU/Linux as well as free & open source software at large have been changing the world for the better.
