Possible Mastodon use case for a small private instance: a group of writers (or indeed a group of anyones, but I'm thinking writers for now) can collaborate and cooperate and/or produce microfic either for their own entertainment or public consumption. Could be a very interesting way to tell a story.
Come to think of it, text turn-based roleplay folks might also find a use case there - in-character accounts for character development maybe? Huh. I dunno. This got away from me a bit.
@chip the possibilities are endless!
@lex_jay yesssss text roleplayyyyyyy
@lex_jay Wouldnโt something like Wire do that as well or better?
@randulo I'm not too familiar with Wire I'm afraid!
@lex_jay https://wire.com - itโs actually a messaging + audio + video calls, but it will do way more than Mastodon and can make several rooms for several groups. You can store and exchange files, itโs encrypted end to end, and not in USA ;-)
@randulo That does sound good. So a bit like Telegram or Signal? Advantage I see with Mastodon would be having a 'built in' group forming on a given server (like joining a Discord group), unless that's also a possibility on Wire.
Please do excuse my at-best-amateur techieness here ๐
@lex_jay The world is deeper than tech, no worries! It happens that I know the Wire people, sod I trust them more. Theyโre in Berlin. Yes, Wire is similar too (but better than) Signal and Telegram
@lex_jay I think @lmorchard is experimenting with a role play server.
@lex_jay i had been contemplating something similar - a kind of Campfire feel, bring your stories, bring your songs, participate in our ongoing story over here kind of thing... then remembered I have no money, sensible names (camp.fire, campfire.social) all seemed taken, and I'm not creative at all...
@penwing This is an absolutely fantastic idea though. Boosting like all heck. Hopefully someone can pick it up and work with you to make it happen? Maybe??
@penwing How about sub-domaining again? Bear in mind Iโm not techie so this might be a nonsense suggestion, but something like theforest.camp.fire orโฆ something less naff, but you get the idea?
@lex_jay back in the days I used to roleplay in chat/forums on msn, that's how I got into using the internet tbh, it would be cool.
@croxus We're of similar age and I remember that too -- yahoo, as well. I still have writer friends who swear by roleplay as an exercise in character development and world building, albeit jointly with others.
@lex_jay I see it happen in fandoms still, I think it's a great way of embracing co creation
@lex_jay There are a ton of possibilities!
