I believe people are already doing Just That (TM). Here's an evidentiary picture:

Chart showing Tesla sales dropping by 13.3%, which in terms of absolute cars is an order of magnitude higher than GM's large-percentage, and VW's smaller-percentage, drop. All others showed significant percentage increases.
